'Un pequeño festival entre amigos', la Feria de Turismo Rural 2009 se realizará en la ciudad de Oaxaca, México y pueblos cercanos el 19-30 de enero. La feria se llevará a cabo en varios lugares y en muchos de los eventos la entrada es libre.
El evento, que este año alcanza su novena edición, es co-organizado por artesanos, provedores de turismo, escuelas de español y Planeta.com, cuyo fundador, Ron Mader, nos da más detalles:
¿Qué es el turismo rural? -- Esta es una alternativa al turismo de masas que permite a los viajeros visitar zonas que se ubican fuera de las áreas urbanas. Las opciones incluyen caminatas y ciclismo, visitas a museos comunitarios y la compra de artesanías. En su promoción el gobierno de México considera al turismo rural como una parte vital a nivel de ecoturismo y al turismo de aventura.
¿Qué es la Feria? -- Desde 2001 la Feria de Turismo Rural reúne a proveedores turísticos, líderes comunitarios, a los medios de comunicación, funcionarios gubernamentales y a turistas entusiastas interesados. El evento muestra las opciones que los viajeros tienen cuando se trata de explorar las zonas rurales de México. Tal vez sea el más grande pequeño festival en el mundo. Nosotros lo llamamos 'un pequeño festival entre amigos' ya que es una reunión local de turistas que se encuentran en Oaxaca, de lugareños y de vecinos de comunidades cercanas.
¿Es este un evento grande? -- Le llamamos un pequeño festival entre amigos, pero no nos malinterprete, es GRANDE en espíritu. Este puede ser el más grande pequeño festival en el mundo y por eso podemos atención en los micro-eventos. Un ejemplo - la visita en 2008 a ver los ahuehuetes en el pueblo de Santa Maria del Tule atraido tres personas. El video - Ahuehuetes of Santa Maria del Tule - ha sido visto casi 5,000 veces. El mayor parte de las actividades de la feria atrae entre 6-12 personas.
¿Qué es papel de Web 2.0? -- En 2009 usamos canales de Web 2.0, incluyendo Facebook, Flickr, Twitter y YouTube para mejorar la comunicación e extendir el dialogo hacia el ciberespacio.

¿Este evento tiene algo que ver con ecoturismo urbano? -- Hace unos años Planeta.com organizó una conferencia en línea acerca de ecoturismo urbano y quedó muy claro que las ciudades tienen que hacer un mejor trabajo en preparar a los visitantes que están llegando a áreas rurales. Tener la Feria de Turismo Rural en la ciudad de Oaxaca es exactamente el tipo de preparación que puede ser educacional y a la vez divertido.
¿Qué sigue? -- A la fecha, Planeta.com está desarrollando un diplomado en ecoturismo con universidades. Estamos también organizando conferencias en línea acerca turismo y cambio climático y el tema de comida, salud y comunidades. En Junio Planeta.com anuncia nuestro ganador del premio Colibi en reconocomiento de la Dia del Medio Ambiente (5 de junio).

The 2009 Rural Tourism Fair will be held in Oaxaca City and nearby towns January 19-30. The fair takes place at multiple venues and most of the events are free. The fair is hosted each year by Planeta.com and friends.
The big change in 2009 -- our 9th year -- is that the fair expands to include multiple meeting points in Oaxaca City and surrounding towns. Bring your walking shoes, camera and a healthy appetite!
The fair highlights options visitors have exploring the rural countryside in a responsible manner. Among the highlights -- a walk with the weavers in the town of Teotitlán del Valle, dining adventures at the Caldo de Piedra Restaurant, local food tastings, a video night and a hand's on visit to a community garden.
The event -- now in its 9th year -- is held in late January as a way to kick start the new year. Since this is an unconventional event we asked Planeta.com founder Ron Mader to talk about the fair and describe what visitors and locals can expect.
"This year's event expands on what we've accomplished the past few years in Oaxaca, Mexico," explained Planeta.com founder Ron Mader, who created the fair in 2001 as a way of conducting an inexpensive grassroots event to bring together locals and visitors. Among the advances -- many of the local artisans and tour providers have their own websites and online photo galleries.
WHAT IS RURAL TOURISM? -- Rural tourism is alternative to mass tourism that allows travelers to visit areas outside of urban areas. Options include hiking and biking, visiting community museums and buying crafts. Mexico's government considers rural tourism a critical component in its promotion along with ecotourism and adventure travel.
WHERE DOES THE FAIR TAKE PLACE? -- The fair is held at various locations in Oaxaca City and nearby towns.
WHO ATTENDS THE FAIR? -- There are multiple audiences. The Rural Tourism Fair brings together travelers, local travel providers, media representatives, community leaders and government officials.
WHY A RURAL TOURISM FAIR? -- In 2002 the Los Angeles Times published a feature about how 9/11 impacted rural communities whose economies depend on tourism. James Smith and Ken Ellingwood's article -- Sept. 11 Leaves Carpet Loomers Idle in Oaxacan Town -- prompted us to think of new ways to raise awareness about rural travel.
IS THIS A BIG EVENT? -- We call this 'a small festival among friends' but make no mistake, it is BIG in spirit. This might well be the largest small festival in the world and for this reason we focus on micro-events. One example - The 2008 visit to the trees in the town of Santa Maria del Tule Tree attracted three people. The video -- Ahuehuetes of Santa Maria del Tule -- however, has already been viewed nearly 5,000 times. Most of the events in the fair attract 6-12 people.
WHAT CAN THE VISITOR EXPECT? -- Visitors to the fair will enjoy direct, personal interaction with local tour operators, community representatives and artisans. That said, participants need to be self-motivated. This event is self-organized by the participants. That said, it provides an easy way of learning about places to visit and how to travel in a responsible manner that respects the environment and the local cultures.
WILL THERE BE GOOD FOOD? -- Of course! Local food in Oaxaca is extraordinary. You'll find plenty of tasty tamales and the traditional Oaxacan power drink, tejate. The 2009 fair includes two organized tastings focusing on chocolate (January 22) and cheese and mezcal (January 28).

HOW HAS THE FAIR CHANGED IN THE PAST FEW YEARS? -- We made a major shift a year ago. Instead of having a 1-day event in one place, we now have a longer event that takes place in multiple locations. Participants need to keep an eye on the agenda.
DOES THIS EVENT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH URBAN ECOTOURISM? -- A few years ago Planeta.com hosted an online conference about urban ecotourism and there's no question that cities must do a better job in preparing visitors who are heading to rural areas. Convening this year's fair in Oaxaca City is precisely the type preparation that can be educational and fun.
WHAT'S NEXT? -- Currently, Planeta.com is developing an ecotourism adult certificate course with readings in English and Spanish. We are also conducting online conferences focusing on tourism and climate change and food, health and building communities. In June Planeta.com will announce the winner of the annual Colibri Ecotourism Award before World Environment Day (June 5).
